MIKE JONES/ PENN JILLETTE â THE SHOW BEFORE THE SHOW
Capri Records
Pianist Mike Jones is considered a most accomplished mainstream jazz musician, whose talents constantly dazzle his audience. Add to the lineup bassist Penn Jillette, who also dazzles his audiences on a regular basis, mostly with his magic act as one half of Penn & Teller. Jones has served as the musical director for Penn & Tellerâs Las Vegas show since 2002. Jillette and Jones perform before the show (hence the title The Show Before the Show) and sometimes during the show. The unlikely pair join to perform popular standards delivered on a plate of first-rate jazz, as Jones tickles the ivories on the lengthy âBroadway,â the sultry Antonio Carlos Jobimâs âCorcovado,â the Gershwinâsâ gem âBut Not for Me,â followed by the Rodgers and Hart classic âHave You Met Miss Jones,â and marks the midpoint with âThere Is No Greater Love.â
Jillette continues to provide background bass for Jones on the Bossa Nova classic âManha de Carnaval,â the Johnny Mercer/Victor Schertzinger number âTangerine,â and itâs hard to beat âOn the Sunny Side of the Streetâ and âExactly Like You, â sandwiching Jones shining bright with his composition âBox Viewing Blues!â Jillette shows he can also do magic with music.
